Budget Weddings in a Time of Financial Uncertainty

Janey Yang asked:

In this terrible time of financial uncertainty, wheather you are directly influenced by this crisis or are still intact, you should be more careful about your cash flow from now on.

Since young people still have to get married, you have to give a good thought about how to save money and have a budget but still perfect wedding.

Budget wedding starts from renting a wedding dress. Renting is less expensive than buying. Men have been renting tuxedos for years, why not wedding dress rental for women? This isn’t as far fetched as it may sound. In addition to buying a wedding dress, most brides have to contend with preserving and storing the wedding dress. With a wedding dress rental, all the bride has to do is choose the dress, wear it, and return in within the allotted time period. She doesn’t even have to worry about the dry cleaning.

With careful planning, costs can be kept under control and a stylish wedding achieved for a fraction of this figure. Here are some more tips.

1. Rings

Ask yourself if you really need to spend thousands on something some people lose or which wears out and becomes unusable.

2. Food

Think about making the food yourself, or at least the puddings and starters. Ask at local catering colleges if they provide a service; you might still get quality but at half the price. Alternatively, ask everyone to bring a dish!

The wedding cake neednÂ’t be expensive either. Think about making it yourself, or go for a simple sponge. A current trend is to serve small individual ‘cup-cakesÂ’, which aren’t expensive but still look nice.

3. Photography

If you do go for a professional photographer, ensure youÂ’re certain of the number and type of prints you want and ask yourself how many you really need.

Alternatively, ask a friend who has an interest in photography, but make sure they have a good camera.

4. Honeymoon

Do you really need a villa in the Seychelles with every conceivable luxury? Honeymoons can add thousands to wedding costs. Think of hiring a romantic cottage somewhere in the UK instead. Or take advantage of low-cost flights to a European city and try to negotiate a good hotel deal (especially if you intend to go out of high season).

Alternatively, ask around among friends and family and see if anyone has a second home you could borrow, or at least rent cheaply, in the UK or abroad.

Bargain, bargain, bargain. You can negotiate for everything, from flowers to the band to the venue. Katie says she got a deal on her dress and the bridesmaid dresses by purchasing them from the same shop. Cut back on things that guests won’t notice. Carley suggests eliminating a couple of courses from the dinner, limiting the bar by featuring a special cocktail, or only buying flowers that are in season. Don’t lose sight of the purpose. The wedding is to celebrate your relationship, so focus on creating a memorable time as opposed to simply a lavish one.

The Best Budget Wedding Favors

Mae Andrea asked:

In these difficult economic times couples are looking to save as money as they on their wedding preparations, which includes wedding favors. Whilst it is tempting to forgo the wedding favors and reallocate the budget elsewhere, it is generally frowned upon in wedding etiquette not to give favors and a percentage of your guests will be expecting them.

Typically the average wedding favor will come in between $2 and $3 each, however this price doesn’t include packaging, decorations and thank you tags. There is also the cost of shipping the favors to you and any applicable taxes.

It is possible thought to produce wedding favors for $2 each or maybe even less if you are particularly savvy with your shopping! The first step is to find your favors. Check out wholesalers if you have a lot of guests to cater for as these vendors will be able to offer you large quantities at lower prices than favor stores. Look for wedding favor wholesalers, gift wholesalers and food and drink wholesalers.

Check out stores on your local high street such as gift stores, dollar stores and even supermarkets who often have a great range of items which make great wedding favors. Things like tea and coffee, chocolates, cookies, candles and even mini cakes can all be bought from supermarkets at far less than their counterparts in favor stores.

The best budget favors are candy ones. Candy can be bought in bulk from many vendors including wholesalers and supermarkets very inexpensively and of course it comes in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors to coordinate with your wedding. Look for flowers and butterflies for a floral themed wedding, hearts for a romantic theme or send your guests back to their childhood with some retro candy.

Candles are another favor which can be bought cheaply particularly from supermarkets and dollar stores. The cheapest are tea lights, however one tea light on its own is not a very attractive favor, so try to include a decorative holder with it. Votive candles are also relatively inexpensive and come in a range of colors and scents. Avoid anything too overpowering, instead choose either unscented or something subtle like Jasmine.

Avoid purchasing favors such as mini soaps from dollar stores as they are often of sub standard quality and you don’t your guests calling you to tell you they came out in a terrible rash two days after your wedding! In fact anything bath or body related such as soaps, bath salts, lotions and potions should be considered with caution and I would recommend avoiding these unless you have a bigger budget and can afford something from a more upmarket retailer.

Packaging is the next thing you need to consider, don’t buy it until you have your favors though! In fact many favors don’t really need packaging at all, candles for instance or tea lights in holders will look just lovely tied with a little ribbon and a thank you tag. Candies will need packaging unless you buy them already wrapped. Consider cellophane bags which you could tie up with ribbon and maybe stick on some added embellishments. Favor boxes themselves can be quite pricey, but are worth considering if you have enough left in your budget as they can transform an otherwise cheap favor into something more special!

Money Savers for a Larger Budget?

YouWish25 is Ready 4 Christmas asked:

My wedding budget is about $18,000, which I understand is a lot of money. But, we are going all out with the food and reception. We will be hosting 130 guests and it’s going to cost about $11,000 for the venue, food, bar and all that stuff.

That only leaves us with $7,000 left. We have to hire a photographer, DJ, get flowers, buy my dress, get the tuxes, the rings, the stationary, pay the church and so one with just that.

I want to save money in with the invitations, programs, centerpieces, favors and decor. However, I’m having a difficult time figuring out how do to it.

There are tons of DIY ideas online. But, I feel so many are geared to wedding that are under $10,000 or for more simple weddings. We are paying nearly $85 per person for food. I don’t want my invitations looking like they cost 50 cents.

So, what are some DIY ideas for a higher budget wedding. I don’t want to serve this amazing food, but then make everything else look like it came from the dollar store.

Tips For Planning A Wedding On A Budget

Diane Crawford asked:

Having a restricted budget doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get married. In fact, most people are planning a wedding on a budget… it’s just that some wedding budgets are larger than others. Now, if your wedding budget is a bit tight, don’t despair. There are many ways to plan low budget weddings and still have it be the best day of your life.

Now, when you’re planning a wedding on a budget, the number of guests you invite can be a critical factor in whether you’re able to stay within your alloted budget. Inviting tons of people to the ceremony itself isn’t usually a major budget concern. If you’re paying for the location you’ll have the ceremony in though, then of course you’ll pay more for a place large enough to hold large numbers of people in the ceremony.

When it comes to the reception though, how many people you’ve invited to your wedding can make a huge difference to your budget. Most people plan to have food catered at their reception for instance, and if you’re planning a wedding on a budget, you’ll quickly learn there are huge cost differences between having 100 people or 1000 people at your wedding reception.

It’s still possible to keep within your restricted wedding budget while having many people at the reception: You simply have a non-food wedding reception. When planning a wedding on a budget, if you simply must have hundreds of people there then you can drastically reduce your wedding expenses by providing entertainment and possibly snacks at your reception instead of a fully catered sit down meal.

Another alternative for food at the reception when you’re planning a wedding on a budget is to do a family cook off. Gather together various family members who enjoy cooking, and ask them to create easy casseroles and various other foods for your wedding reception. You should budget for buying those food ingredients of course, and you can even ask them to give this to you instead of buying wedding gifts. They can then get together and create a pot luck style wedding dinner, and your wedding reception can be pulled off in a buffet style form instead of having people served by waiters and catering crew.

A great creative idea when planning a wedding on a budget is to simply have a picnic or barbecue style wedding reception. This can be done at a local park or in someone’s back yard, and it will save the expense of renting a reception hall.

Music and entertainment are another way you can reduce costs when planning a wedding on a budget. Instead of hiring a live band for your reception for instance, consider creating your own special song mix to have playing on CDs during the reception.

You can reduce the cost of flowers when planning a wedding on a budget too. You don’t have to forgo having wedding flowers completely, but consider ordering only half as many wedding flowers as you originally intended. Better still, order the flowers you want for the wedding bouquet, but choose less expensive flowers for the rest of the ceremony and reception. There are many flowers which compliment each other in shape, size and color – so choose those that compliment the bouquet if you want the wedding to have a specific color scheme for instance, or go with a variety of inexpensive flowers to create a more spontaneous effect. Either option will still look beautiful, all while helping you to stay within the alloted wedding budget you’ve set.
